Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is commonly referred to as "Thai boxing" or "Thai Kickboxing". It is a martial art in where you can use 8 weapons; two hands to punch, two elbows, two knees to knee opponents and two legs to kick. This is why it's commonly known as "the art of 8 limbs". Muay Thai Frequently Asked Questions:
How do you pronounce Muay Thai?
The word "Muay" is pronounce like "moy" (rhymes with boy or soy). Muay Thai is frequently mispronounced in Australia with many Aussies calling it "Moo Thai"🐄 or "Mai Thai" 🍹 or even "kickboxing".
What are the levels for each of our Muay Thai classes?
We do things slightly differently to the other local gyms; our classes are in levels, we call it The Pretty Process. The purpose of this is so that the class is tailored to the experience of everyone in the class. No one is out of their depth wondering "what the hell is going on". It's also because if we grouped everyone together in one class we wouldn't fit everyone in the building!
We have 6 levels currently:
Level 1: Beginners
Level 2: Intermediate or "Gen Pop" as we call it
Level 3: Build A Fighter Challenge
Level 4: Prospects (BAF Alumni)
Level 5: Amateur Fighters
Level 6: Professional Fighters
I've trained Muay Thai before, can I do my free trial in another level class?
We only offer free trial classes for our Level 1 Beginners classes. Come along and learn our systems. If you're experienced and your technique is good then the coach will let you know you can bump you up to Level 2 straight away.
I'm visiting Cairns and have trained Muay Thai before, can I do another level?
You are welcome to purchase a casual class pass for any of our Level 2 classes. Unfortunately Level 3 and up is only open to members who have completed The Pretty Process.
I'm a complete beginner, what is the best class for me?
We have two beginners technique classes and two fitness classes every week. There's a total of 8 techniques classes that go on rotation. You can join in at any point! The two fitness classes are based around what you've learnt that week in the technique classes.
Read more on our beginners Muay Thai classes here.
We will learn the basics of:
-
Pad holding 101
-
How to defend a punch and kick
-
How to hold for a punch and kick
Check out more on our beginners Muay Thai program here.
What is the first thing I'll learn as a beginner?
Base. Base, base and more base. What is base? "The ability to hold space between your feet." Ask anyone in our gym that question and guaranteed they know the answer. Fundamentals are your bread and butter.
Yes the spinning kicks and elbows look cool but if you don't have solid fundamentals then the chance of you landing it as slim to 0.
How do I hold Thai pads?
We will teach you! In fact Coach Pauls developed a fool proof way of teaching people how to hold pads so you'll be looking like a pro in no time! Our "pad holding 101" is taught in our beginners class, so be sure to join in on those classes.
Can anyone train Muay Thai?
Why the Dickens not!!
We believe that everyone and anyone has the potential to be a successful thai boxer. Frequently people are told "you either have it or you don't", but that's not the case at Pretty Top Team Cairns.
We have a range of Muay Thai martial artists from all walks of life. The thing they have in common is their love of Muay Thai and their ability to trust in our "Pretty" process.
What class do I start in?
Everyone starts in our Level 1 class; beginners Muay Thai classes. Once you've completed these 8 technique classes you can progress to Level 2 "Gen Pop" classes.
Do you have a fight team?
We have a very successful professional and amateur fight team. With multiple champions from state, national, south-pacific and even a world champion.
We have developed a Build A Fighter challenge for those who want to have their first fight for Pretty.
For more information on the BAF Challenge click here!
What do I bring and wear to my first class?
If you own boxing gloves then bring them along, if not we have some you can hire for a small fee. Wear comfortable active wear. Muay Thai is done barefoot so not specific shoes are required.
Do I have to fight to join a fight gym?
No. In fact, the majority of our members don't fight. They simply train Muay Thai for the long list of benefits like fitness, strength, self defence and meeting our awesome group of Pretty members.
That being said; everything we teach is centred around fighting. Our Head Coach and Co-Owner Paul Hosking has the rule "if it wouldn't work in a fight, I wouldn't teach it." This rule is the best way to grow the sport and to try and avoid people running around like loons and calling it "Muay Thai".
Ok, sounds like my cup of tea... how do I try a class?
