The 2024 FNQ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships saw a stellar performance from the Pretty Top Team, proving once again that we are becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Cairns BJJ community. After only 12 months of offering BJJ at Pretty Top Team, we showcased our skills and wrestling-style BJJ against some of the long-established local gyms.
The Competitors and Results:
We had four dedicated athletes step onto the mats to represent Pretty Top Team, and their hard work truly paid off:
- Hayden Cole - Gold in the -85.50kg No-Gi White Belt division
- Alex Merriman - Gold in the -73.50kg No-Gi White Belt division
- Bruce Xiong - Bronze in the -79.50kg No-Gi White Belt division
- Coach Juan Ramos - Silver in both the -82.30kg No-Gi Brown Belt division and the Gi Brown Belt division
In addition to their division matches, our three white belts — Hayden, Alex, and Bruce — also competed in the Absolute Division (open weight class). They showed incredible grit and determination, with Hayden securing the bronze medal, Bruce finishing 4th, and Alex coming in 5th.
Unfortunately, Freddie Ralai was unable to get a match in his age bracket, but his dedication and spirit didn’t go unnoticed!
A Team Effort:
Huge thanks go out to our BJJ coaches, Coach Mikey and Coach Juan, whose guidance and hard work have been instrumental in the development of our team. This event was a clear testament to the strength of our program and our athletes' commitment.
The FNQ Championships was another milestone for Pretty Top Team, and our competitors left it all on the mats. We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come in such a short time and are excited to continue growing and competing at the highest levels.
Here's to many more medals and continued success on the mats! 🥋👊
